ABOUT CATS

Obligate Carnivores

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are biologically designed to thrive on animal protein — not plants, not grains, and not carbohydrates. Their digestive systems are short and highly acidic, built to break down raw meat efficiently while offering little ability to process plant matter.

Cats cannot produce certain essential nutrients on their own, such as taurine, arachidonic acid, and vitamin A, so they must obtain them directly from animal tissue. Grains and fillers don’t just fail to meet these needs — they can actually burden the digestive system, contribute to inflammation, and displace the nutrient‑dense foods cats are meant to eat.

When you feed a cat the diet nature designed for them, you’re supporting their energy, digestion, hydration, and long‑term health in the most natural way possible.

Desert Animals at Heart

Their ancestors lived in arid climates, which is why cats naturally have a low thirst drive. They’re designed to get most of their moisture from raw prey — not from a water bowl.

No Side-to-Side Jaw

Their jaws only move up and down, perfect for tearing meat but not for grinding plants or grains. This is another reason carbohydrate-heavy diets don’t suit them.

Cats Speak Human

Adult cats rarely meow at each other — meowing is a learned behavior they use specifically to communicate with people. They literally develop a “language” for their humans.

Unique Paw Print

Every cat has a one‑of‑a‑kind nose pattern, making it a tiny, adorable signature of their identity.

The Three "T's" of Feeding

Taste, Texture, Temperature

Cats evaluate food through three key sensory categories. When you understand these, feeding becomes easier, smoother, and far more successful.

BG Bone

Taste

Cats rely heavily on scent, not sweetness — they actually lack taste receptors for sweet flavors. They’re drawn to rich, meaty aromas and high‑quality animal proteins. If a food doesn’t smell appealing, they won’t touch it.

BG Crown

Texture

Texture is one of the biggest deal‑breakers for cats. Some prefer pâté, others like minced, shredded, chunky, or whole-prey textures. Matching the texture to your cat’s preference can instantly improve acceptance.

BG Heart

Temperature

Cats instinctively prefer food served at prey temperature — slightly warm, around body temperature. Cold food straight from the fridge can be off‑putting because it doesn’t smell as strong and doesn’t mimic the warmth of fresh prey.

Cats are:

Imprint Feeders

Many people think cats are picky eaters, but the truth is far more interesting: cats are imprint feeders.

This means they form strong, lasting associations with the foods they were exposed to early in life — especially between 3 and 6 months of age. The smell, texture, temperature, and even the shape of their food becomes “normal” to them, and anything outside that imprint can feel unfamiliar or even unsafe.

This isn’t stubbornness; it’s survival instinct. In the wild, eating something unfamiliar could be dangerous, so cats evolved to trust what they already know.

Understanding imprint feeding helps families approach dietary changes with patience, strategy, and compassion. When you introduce new foods gradually and positively, you’re working with your cat’s biology, not against it.

LONG LIVE CATS

At Natural Carnivore, we decided cats deserved more than the tiny shelf space they’re usually squeezed into — so we gave them half the store. While most pet shops hand dogs the lion’s share, we built a space where cat families finally feel seen. Every aisle, every product, every detail reflects our belief that cats aren’t an afterthought; they’re remarkable, instinct‑driven companions with real nutritional needs. Here, they get the respect, attention, and dedicated space they’ve always deserved.
